Final sketches this round of hearings, Guantanamo 9/11 pretrials

Finished for now in Guantanamo at 9/11 pretrial hearings. As seen, Military Commissions judge Army Col. Pohl announces decision to hold proceedings until an FBI breach is investigated and resolved. Prior to hearing, KSM conferred with defense. BW sketches show Brg. Gen. Mark Martins at a press conference, and in final sketch we see victim family members watch the defense give statements from the media press room.

Families who lost loved ones during 9/11 attacks- portraits

While here in Guantanamo during 9/11 pretrial hearings, families who have lost loved ones come to observe court proceedings. They met with media today to share their views and stories. I sketched and took note; both visually and written.

April 14th and 15th 9/11 pretrial hearing sketches

Have returned to Guantanamo to sketch the 9/11 pretrial hearings-
 first visit back since August.
Court is moving along, but as always, the issues are not predictable. We are on break tomorrow while it's determined how to investigate a possible FBI breach in the defense team. Back in court Thursday.

Zora Neale Hurston

Today Google honors the birthday of Zora Neale Hurston: http://zoranealehurston.com

I was given the honor of creating cover art for a biography of her and it was one of my favorite jobs as an illustrator. Many thanks to WH Freeman and art director Maria Epes.

In researching who she was, I read 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' and was profoundly moved. It helped to inform how I would treat my illustration of her.

Listen to Ruby Dee read an excerpt from the audio book of 'Their Eyes' here:
